This lesson focuses on developing students’ ability to write with a clear and deliberate intention for AQA English Language Paper 1, Question 5. Students learn how writers use language and structure consciously to shape meaning and influence the reader’s response.

The lesson can also be easily adapted for other exam boards or for KS3.

The lesson includes:

  • A do now starter that activates prior knowledge by asking students to identify different intentions (joy, fear, anticipation) from contrasting descriptions
  • Exploration of writer’s intention through the short film The Present, using key frames to analyse how meaning and emotion are created
  • Comparison of student examples to evaluate how effectively intention is conveyed and how it can be improved
  • A scaffolded writing activity where students improve a paragraph through conscious language choices
